This is our first forum, where we will be discussing about Reading, Sadness, Happiness, Taboo topics, Bullying, Diversity and other related topics.

Use the comments space to add your opinions. Remember, every student in the class and some teachers are going to read what you write, so be careful with grammar aspects, using the correct vocabulary and also with the content of your opinions. You can agree or disagree with anyone's opinions, but be respectful.

The forums are part of your evaluation, so the more you write, the better. Do not just agree or disagree, but argument.

Thanks

After our first class it is clear that some of you are crazy about reading, (Friday classroom students know I'm talking about Raianne and Victor), some of you like reading and usually read, and some of you (Hi. Andrey) have no reading habits at all. But we all know that reading books is not the only way to read. One can read newspapers or news sites, magazines and everything you do on the Internet, which  is only possible because you can read. That's a marvelous ability because it opens a world of possibilities and access to information. What would your lives be like if you couldn't read? Have you ever thought of that?

Here is the slide we talked about last class (Friday, the 4th) and as I told you at the end you'll see:

  • the video of Barack Obama's Speech launching the campaign "It Gets Better" against the bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people ; t
  • he video of Katy Perry talking about how she got inspired by Kerouac's "On the Road";
  • the "Firework" video, which was dedicated to Obama's campaign.

Check the PREZI slide and let's talk about the videos and the song.

To start with, I think this part of the song is quite interesting. What do you think?

You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

1. What does she mean when she says "You're original cannot be replaced"?

2. Do you think campaigns like that can help teenagers think twice before commiting suicide? Why or how?

3. How can one "ignite the light" when they "feel buried deep"?

P.S. Saturday class, I'm sorry, but because of the Holidays you are seeing it in advance, but don not worry, that will be great because we can start exchanging ideas here and continue talking next class.

I think be happy or not it's a choice. Sometimes, we can feel very bad and like a piece of lame, but we have to fight against every bad feelings, 'cause nobody can do it for us. I usually try to smile all the time, feel optimist and see the best point of everything. It's hard, but we're responsable of our life. That's the secret of life.

Hi Raianne,
I agree with you, when you say that we have to fight against our bad feelings, but some people really can´t. I don't think that's impossible, but think of the boy in the video, who is in a hospital, probably with cancer and alone. Where can someone in such conditions find ways to fight against depression?

I think that campaing is very important and those famous people should do favors like that one to the society, 'cause they represent and they are (good or bad) exemples of adults for teenagers. Sometimes the teenagers don't see their parents and other family members as trustworthies, and choose arts, such as music as a friend, so it's easier to singers to make teenagers think about their acts and their feelings.
Well, answering the second question, I think when someone is thinking about suicide what they need is to find something to help them, such as psychologist or religion. The think about suicide is graver and needs more help than a singer can give, I guess. So, through psychologist or religion, the person can find an inner strenght (ignite the light) even when you feel buried deep.

Hi Thais,
I found Skoob very interesting. There's something similar at google books where you can find some free versions of some classics and add to your library. I'm not sure if it is possible to create a social network and socialize. Anyway, thanks for the great suggestion

Thank you, Nathália, for the videos. Thais, I've already know about Skoob. It's amazing, isn't it?

I really think the ability of read is important in our lives.Sometimes is a good ability,to open our eyes,to we can learn more about something and to we have the ability of write and express our opinion about something.Sometimes is a bad ability, mainly for the children when they read things that is not for them ages.
1.You are unic, independent of your race, religion, sexual option.Thre isn't any person in the word like you.
2.Yes,because they have to feel that they are important.Maybe they aren't important for who they want to be,but they are important to somebody.I guess the teenagers have to take care with what they read or listen because some things are made to get people on a depression. And they have to extract from this things what they would apply in their lives.
3.We would think that we have a light inside us,and this like want and have to be lighted. This light is bigger than any sadness and this light want to explode and expand to show all its power and how much powerful we are.

Each one of us is unique. We have particularities and diferences. This is a hard question. What is important thing is that no one is equal, all are irreplaceable. About the suicide, I think the music can raise self-esteem of the people and even evitate the suicide. But it depends the person. Teacher, you don’t have easier questions? Oh my God! Well... you can ignite the light when you feel happy, enlightened and important. When you feel buried deep, you can raise up and cause changes in your life.

I've identified some mistakes related to the use of infinitives and gerunds. You have already studyied it. Why don't we review the rules. I'll try to select some material and post here for you.

These campaings like that can be helpful. Maybe teenagers can think about their diferences not like a wrong thing and just ignore whom tries to bullying them! Think about being original it's a good way to explain that diferences are good; and not exist anybody with your defects and qualities! When I was a kid I was so fat and everyone laughed at me, and joked about my weight. At school my "friends" did a horrblel song about that to me! I cried a lot thinking I was the worst person in the world, but I grew up and things have changed and even in my mind. It was a bad thing but easy to solve. But there are many permanent diferences, things people have to carry for all their lives. They don't have to imagine they are guilty, because there are nothing wrong with them! Nobody have the same DNA, so no one is equal!

1. It means that each one is only in the world. No one can be replaceable. So, everybody should know, think and be as irreplaceable person, but unhappily it doesn’t happen.
2. I think campaigns can help teenagers. But in my opinion, when a person decides committing a suicide, the last think that he/she will make is to take a help. Well, this kind of aid is going to be good if the person sees and comprehension campaigns before the decision has been taken.
3. Staying with a family is a amazing way to “ignite the light”, because when we are with our parents or with a member of the family that we identify, we do good things, divide opinions and on the same time one may help each other to find solutions for different problems or divide good and bad experiences. This is the best options, I think. They always will be together with the person that “feel buried deep” and they will look a solution.

This music encourages people to accept themselves as they are, today is so hard because we live in a society that surrounds us with a lot of taboos, and as young people like Katy Perry it is excellent to have this kind of music for young people to accept the way they are!
I believe she was implying that we are unique and can not be replaced or copied because each has a particular characteristic.
Campaigns of this kind can change the teenagers who are thinking about committing suicide, because this song shows the importance that each has no matter what they look like.
Noticing only good things and how much we are loved by people around us.

1. Everyone is different, each person has their personality, their life story, their friends, and all that makes each person unique, no human being is equal to the other, no one is replaceable.
2. This kinda of campaign can certainly help teenagers' self-steem. Katy Perry is very famous, and very appealing to the teen public, and I think listening to your idol say your no a waste of space and your capable of doing what you want can help teenagers have more faith in themselves.
3. With help, people can discover that they are good in something, or discover that there's no problem in being different, and so, they can "ignite their light".

Bulling is something we all know, experience and practice. What the people dont know is that bulling can bring serious damages to the sufferers. It is very sad to see young people killing themselves for little reasons that they suffer prejudice.
With this, if we know someone in such situations of despair, we must help them, show that he is loved and that people like him. That it makes a difference and should not worry about what others think or say about him.
Prejudice is sad, bad and can kill, we know that, so why practice the bulling? Let's let him aside, Nobody is like anyone else, we are all different and this difference is that we must respect.

When she says "you're original cannot be replaced" she wants to say everyone is single and nobody can change this and everybody have to love yourself and what is. I think those campaings have a good idea, 'cause they work trying to raise the self steem of young people that have many different problems in different ways, that way the teenagers feel strong to face the problems and they can "ignite the light and let it shine" cause they believe in themselves.

Hi guys! Bullying (mainly against teenagers) was a subject much discussed by us in our last classes. So there's a little fun: Demi Lovato is one among many other artists who participate in campaigns "Teens Agains Bullying"and "STOMP Out Bullying" which seek to combat bullying in schools. She has been in programs like America's Next Top Model and CNN Newsroom to discuss the theme.Demi admitted that she had suffered experiences of bullying at school, she was called Fat and Promiscuous. Well and here are the sites if anyone wants to take a look , very cool the campaign proposals to help young people discover their special side, sharing experiences and opinions. "You just gotta Ignite the ligh tand let it shine Just own the night Like the 4th of July!"

"You're original can not be replaced" This sentence say everything that the people need feel when they are think of themselves. Because everybody is different, have their own personality, live differents realities, react in different ways in the same situation. And nobody is less especial becouse of that, in this way is necessary we have self love to be completely happy.
Campaigns like Obama did can help teenagers because they have a different way of saying important things and can have a major influence. Often politicians exert strong influences due to the way they talk to the people. Thus, I believe they can prevent suicides through campaigns.
You can "ignite the light" when "feel buried deep" doing something that you like, talk with some people that you trust and listen your hart.
bye.
